Sight Word Fun & Learning to Read Week #3

Sight Words: and, down, look, see, up

Word Families: ut & at review

Books: This week we used books from Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning Readers (the Lil Divas read these nightly), First Little Readers: Guided Reading Level A , and Sight Word Readers Parent Pack: Learning the First 50 Sight Words Is a Snap!

Sight Word Activities:

Slap It!

This week's Slap It! was given a fun lil twist by adding some fly swatters (from the $1 Spot at Target).

Oh, the fun the Lil Divas had swatting those pesky sight word bugs! :) I used all 16 words we have been working on over the past few weeks. It was a wonderful interactive review - be prepared for giggles!

Magnetic Writing Board Fun

Forming Sight Words - I wrote the weeks words on large bee cutouts and provided the Lil Divas with our Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet letters. They got busy reading the words and using the letters to re-write the words.

Then, they practiced writing the words on their magnetic doodle board using the Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet letters to write the words on the boards. They found this activity fun and really enjoyed it.

Sight Words Song - Each week we sing a simple sight word song for each word to help the lil Divas with the spelling/recognition of each word. The Oldest Diva really likes this & sings the song with different sight words on her own!  :)

What We Sang: The Sight Word Song (sung to to the tune of B-I-N-G-O)

There was a sight word I wanted to spell and AND was my sight word.
A-N-D (clap with each letter) spells and,
A-N-D (clap with each letter) spells and,
A-N-D (clap with each letter) spells and
& and was my sight word!

We follow the above tune/format for each of our sight words!

We continue to use Sight Word Printables from MissChapple.com. They include writing the word, recognizing and finidng the words in a chart/table as well as within sentences. The girls have really gotten the hang of these - even the Littlest Diva.

Marble Sight Words - I got this cute idea from Carissa over at 1+1+1 =1

We used our marbles (from our "reward" jars) to write the sight words. The Oldest Diva did great & really liked this. The Littlest Diva needed my help forming the letters from the marbles but she did it too.

We also played a fun Catch the Sight Word Game w/a bee balloon I founf at Target for $1.00. I wrote all our sight words and they Lil Divas threw the bee to each other and whichever word their hands landed on - they had to read aloud. Fun!

Word Family Activities: ut & at review week

I though it would be a good idea to review the 2 word families we had done because the Oldest Diva seems to confuse at with ut & it at first glance. I have to force her to look at certain words again and then she realizes her mistake and corrects it.

We re-visited our word sliders this week for ut and at:

and I had the Lil Divas play a little review game where they had to put the bugs (with at and ut words written on them) on the correct flower.

What did you do to practice sight words and/or phonics this week?

Hand & Foot Print Bumble Bee

Book:
Bee & Me - this is such an adorable book! My girls loved it and I can see little kids just wanting to read this one over & over again especially if you get the ani-motion version like we did. It has a little bee that moves but this isn't just a gimmicky book. The story is very well told and you are sure to learn lots about what bees do and it might even inspire some moral lessons along the way! We really enjoyed this one.

Craft: Hand & Foot Print Bumble Bee

What You Need:
Yellow, Black & White Paint
Blue Construction Paper
Black marker

What To Do:
1. paint child's foot yellow & press onto blue construction paper - this will be the bee's body

2. Paint hand white and press onto side of foot to make wing - repeat on each side

This is what your bee will look like: (let dry)

3. Add black stripes onto footprint (body)

4. Using marker add antenna, eyes, etc. - you can also use wiggly eyes and pipe cleaners if desired

Isn't that a cute lil bee? Plus, it's made of the best stuff - your lil one's precious hands & feet! :) LOVE it!

Honeycomb Art & Fingerprint Bees

We have been all abuzz with our Bee related crafts and learning.

After learning about Bees I must say I feel a certain kinship to the female worker bees - they are a lot like us Mamas! :)

2 Great Books we read:

Are You a Bee? (Backyard Books) by Judy Allen - I have really been enjoying this entire series about insects. They have one for the butterfly, bee, ant, spider, grasshopper, ladybug and dragonfly. The book gives many facts in a fun kid friendly way. If you have not read them - I highly recommend them. A great way to introduce scientific facts via storytelling.

In the Trees, Honey Bees! by Lori Mortensen - full of wonderful facts and amazing illustrations this was probably my favorite book of the week! I learned so much from it and the girls were enthralled with the full page, colorful llustrations. A gem of a book.

After looking at some books with pictures of beehives and honeycomb I let the girls use our pattern blocks to make a beehive. This was a great way to introduce the concept of what I wanted them to do for our craft.

The Craft: Honeycomb Art & Fingerprint Bees

What You Need:
Honeycomb cereal
glue
blue construction paper
yellow and black paint
black permanent marker
markers or crayons in various colors

What To Do:

1. Glue honeycomb cereal onto paper to make a beehive. I started by telling the Lil Divas they would be desigining their own beehive using the honeycomb cereal.
They took a moment to think about their design and then the fun began.

The Oldest Diva went to work making a beehive shape

The Littlest Diva did a bit more snacking than gluing

but she eventually got into the project too

Here is the Oldest Diva's design:

and the Littlest Diva's design:

 Now to add some honeybees!

2. Dip thumb into yellow paint and add to paper wherever they would like a bee. I started by having them pick the number of bees they wanted on their picture. They each chose their age for their number so we had 4 & 5 bees to make.

3. Then I used their pointer finger to make the head by dipping it in black paint and pressing on top of the yellow thumbprint body.

Here is what they looked like after the fingerprinting:

4. Let the paint dry and then use your black marker to add stripes, wings and antennas (see below)

5. Add scenery/details to picture as desired

6. Behold your Honeycomb & Fingerprint Art - so cute!

Buzzzzzz Says the Bumble Bee

We have left the Butterflies behind & moved along in our Insect theme to Bees!

I still have some Butterfly things left to share/post but I had to jump into our Bee craft because it was too cute & needs to be shared.

Book:

This was a cute book & the girls really enjoyed it. It is about a (girl) bee who reads in a newspaper that bees can not fly due to their large bodies. She believes it to be true - so she stops being able to fly.

Craft: Toilet Paper Roll Bumble Bee

What You Need:
Toilet Paper Roll
Yellow Paint
Paint Brushes
White Construction paper
Wiggly Eyes
Black Tape (you can also use paint)
Black Pipe Cleaner
Glue - we used tacky glue
Black Marker

What To Do:

1. Paint the TP roll in yellow & let dry (we did this on one day and finished the craft the next day)

2. cut the black pipe cleaner in half and make a v shape to form antenna - glue or staple to the inside of top of TP roll

3. Add wiggly eyes (or just draw them on) and paint on face using black marker

4. Using your black tape help child cut strips (make sure they aren't too long) and arrange to make stripes on the bee

5. Using white construction paper (fold in half) cut out wing shape and glue to back side of bee.

You will have an adorable TP bee that can be proudly displayed!

Have you made any bee crafts? We have a few more bee related things to do & I am always looking for great ideas so I'd love for you to share!
