World Read Aloud Day - Wednesday March 9, 2011

If you've been following/reading this blog for any length of time you know I LOVE to read. You also know I think that reading with/to children is essential! Which is why I wanted to take the time to post about World Read Aloud Day.

What is World Read Aloud Day?
(copied from LitWorld.org) World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially those words that are shared from one person to another, and creates a community of readers advocating for every child’s right to a safe education and access to books and technology. By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.

So now that you know what it is & what it stands for - What can you do?
1. Make time to read with your loved ones on March 9th. Of course this should be done everyday but really emphasize & focus on it to celebrate the movement - read more than usual or make it a fun family event. Invite other family members to read stories and participate! It can be lots of fun for everyone.
2. Spread the Word - write about it on your blog and/or share with freinds & family.
3. Organize a Community Reading Event
4. LitWorld.Org World Read Aloud Day Activities

Literacy is so important - I hope you take the time to find out more about this wonderful program and participate!
